FRUITFULNESS (Part 3)
Romans 6:6
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Read: John 12:24; Romans 6:6-23, 8:10
In this series on fruitfulness, we have learnt that dying is significant to being fruitful. We saw examples of plant growth, baby conception, and Christ’s ascension to glory to show how death produces fruit. Therefore, we concluded that to be spiritually fruitful, one must die to sin and self. Today’s devotional will focus on sin and its hindrance to fruitfulness.
Biblical evidence reveals that Satan is the originator of sin. Adam did not sin until the devil tricked him, leading to his banishment from the Garden of Eden. Romans 5:12 says, “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.” This means that as Adam and Eve reproduced, leading to human evolution, everyone who is born is delivered with a “body of sin” and is prone to spiritual death.
The body of sin is vulnerable to spiritual death because it is a life without God. As long as a person possesses the natural sinful body, they are subject to the flesh and are dead to God, no matter how moral and pleasant they are. This is the reason Jesus gave His life to atone for sin—making His death the remedy to death and the passport to fruitfulness in the spirit. Essentially, whoever is not “born again” can never crucify the flesh and be fruitful spiritually.
The Bible reading today says that to destroy the sinful nature, the old man, who is the same as the flesh and the body of sin that breeds iniquity, must be crucified with Christ. In other words, to conquer sin and spiritual unfruitfulness, you must become unresponsive to the flesh and embrace the life of the Spirit. Living a spirit-filled life requires the help of the Holy Spirit. Beloved, ask God to help you, and you will be fruitful in all good works, both spiritual and physical.
