FRUITFULNESS (Part 4)
1 Peter 2:2 – As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: (KJV)
Read: Matthew 13:1-23
In the series, we discussed the physical and spiritual fruitfulness, including how sin hinders it. Today, the focus would be on “Self”. One of the most critical determinants of an individual’s growth is their background and environment. John 12:24 says, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.” In other words, the ground plays a significant role in the germination of the seed, leading to fruitfulness.
Matthew 13:3-8 reveals the parable of the farmer who scattered seeds on the ground to sow them: some fell on the footpath and got eaten by birds, a portion landed on rocky land and had no roots to sustain growth, a few fell among thorns and choked, while others sank into healthy soil and produced bountiful crops. You would notice that all the seeds fell to the ground, but the type of ground and the soil quality made the difference.
The seeds eaten by birds are people who hear the Word of God but allow Satan to take it from their hearts. The rocky ground are people who accept the Word but give up on it when trouble comes. Those among the thorny weeds are people who give room to worries and love for money, thereby hindering the Word from growing. The last set are people who understand the Word and produce fruits.
Beloved, growth does not happen by chance. If you want to become radiantly fruitful as the set of seeds which fell on the fertile ground, it takes being honest with yourself and intentional about the ground of your heart. Today’s Bible text explains the importance of spiritual growth; therefore, just as a seed grows well in the right soil, every child of God needs the correct environment to flourish. Be deliberately receptive to the Word of God and sensitive to the Holy Spirit. By doing so, anything that is draining your zeal for God and hindering your fruitfulness will cease.
