MYSTERY OF DIVINE PREFERENCE
Matthew 24:40–44 (40) – Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. (NIV)
Read: Hebrews 12:16
The scripture provides examples that demonstrate the preference for one over others in certain situations. Esau lost his birthright to Jacob, who received their father’s final blessings. Cain and Abel both offered sacrifices to God, but heaven honoured Abel’s offering but rejected that of his brother. When Pharaoh’s baker and butler were jailed, the latter regained freedom while the baker was hanged (Genesis 4:3–8; 25:29–34; 40).
The Bible reading for today describes the fate of two individuals during the rapture. This is similar to the story of the two thieves nailed alongside Jesus. One of the thieves found salvation, and the other went straight to hell (Luke 23:39–43).
The characters mentioned above offer valuable lessons. Esau sold his destiny for a red stew. God rebuked Cain’s offering because it contained unripe fruits. The rejected crucified thief missed eternity because he criticised Christ, while his companion got a free last-minute ticket to heaven. God must have saved the butler instead of the baker because he could aid Joseph’s release from prison. The butler, closer to the king because he served him food, played a significant role in Joseph’s recommendation to the palace.
Beloved, verses 42–43 of the key text emphasise “keeping watch.” Every child of God must be spiritually awake, neither falling behind in the journey of faith nor becoming a vessel for satanic antics, leading to divine rejection. With vigilance, holiness, and prayer, the grace of God can position an individual for divine preference and elevation.
PRAYER
Hymn: Christian, seek not yet repose — Charlotte Elliott (1836)
1. Father, I will do Your will. Please anoint me for glorious preference.
(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)
1. Give thanks to God.
2. Father, please cause me to blossom and let my potential become a reality.
3. Decree according to Job 22:28: My story has transformed into glory. I am the head, not the tail (prophesy).
YOU SHALL BE HONOURED!
