THE SHEEP’S GROWTH
1 Corinthians 3:1-5 (1) – Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in the Christian life. (NLT)
Read: 2 Peter 3:18
We learnt yesterday about the shepherd, sheep, and the Holy Spirit. The utmost desire of the shepherd, according to 3 John 2, is that the sheep grow spiritually in the same way the physical body develops. However, Galatians 5:16-17 reveals that the greatest enemy of this spiritual growth is flesh. On this basis, the work of the Holy Spirit is to nurture man with the things of God above bodily desires. Whoever is not subject to the leading of the Spirit remains under the control of the flesh! This was the condition of the Corinthians, whom Paul addressed in the Bible Focus for today.
The people of Corinth exhibited carnal-mindedness and behaved like infant Christians who were unwilling to mature spiritually. There are many such Christians and even ministers of the gospel who claim to be born again yet live in the flesh. Despite their experience in the faith, they lack evidence of Christ because they still gossip, envy, backbite, and commit all manner of atrocities. There are also people who disguise themselves as if they have a healthy relationship with God but are deceivers. If you don’t make amends, you are in danger of God’s wrath.
Beloved, you will examine yourself to see how and where you are walking in the flesh. God’s desire for you is not to remain a baby sheep but to grow spiritually into maturity. If you discover anything contrary to God’s pattern in your life or actions, repent and turn to the Great Shepherd; He will not reject you but nurture you by His Spirit.
