WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?
Genesis 47:1-6 (3) – Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?” “Your servants are shepherds,” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” (NIV)
Read: Proverbs 22:29
There was a time when Joseph became Egypt’s prime minister, and his brethren came from Canaan Land with their belongings. Joseph chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh. As read in today’s Bible text, the king first asked for their occupation. The brothers replied that they were experienced shepherds driven to the land by famine in their country.
When situations arise and you find yourself in a different place or country, you should have what you can call a profession. This is not necessarily what you studied in school, but something you can bank on to earn a living. In Genesis 2:15, after God created Adam, He placed him in charge of the garden before forming the wife. Whether as a man or woman, you must have an occupation or skill that can be exchanged for resources to sustain you in any circumstance.
If Joseph’s brothers had not been skilled in shepherding, they would have become redundant. Instead, these brothers were able to defend their occupation by saying, “Your servants are shepherds, just as our fathers were.” In other words, the brothers even added the experience they had gained from their fathers to their own skills, which made them experts. How well can you defend your certificate or handiwork? Have you considered learning more from experts in your area of specialisation, or is there anything else you could be doing while you are applying for a job?
Beloved, as 2025 progresses, look for ways to develop what you already know or start afresh by enrolling in courses and polishing your skills because these are needed to shine from glory to glory. Remember, Joseph also became the second in command to Pharaoh because of his expertise. Your skills, too, will make way for you!
