EXCESSIVE AFFECTION
Colossians 3:5 – Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: (KJV)

Excessive affection refers to the high priority or obsessive passion devoted to things other than God. In today’s Bible text, Paul admonishes that every child of God must put to death all manner of sins, including undue affection.
There are several ways people nurse or display inordinate affection. For example, excessive love for a human is a sin, but it is often overlooked because it is considered a common way of life. Many believers revere their pastors more than Christ and respect social elites more than God. But Exodus 20:3 says, “You shall have no other gods before Me”. There is only one God, and the path to Him is Jesus Christ. Whatever or whoever takes His place is an idol.
Some people idolise material possessions like money, family history, property, jewellery, sex, and football. All these will vanish except for what is done for God. The Lord Most High will never share His glory with anything. Whatever item is valued more than the Almighty Creator lures a person into danger and causes them to sin against God.
Beloved, if there are other ways you are nursing any affection contrary to God’s standard, the remedy is to put everything about you and your thoughts under the subjection of the Holy Spirit. Make practical steps to rid yourself of the secret gods in your life and your passion for the world. Let nothing separate you from the love of God, and it shall be well with you!
