JACK OF ALL TRADES
Genesis 47:6 – And the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock.” What do you do? (NIV)
Read: Genesis 47:1-6
The slogan “Jack of all trades, master of none” is commonly used to describe someone who is involved in too many things rather than focusing on one to become an expert. Some people are doing several things but have not gained mastery due to the limited priority given to the specifics, which shrinks the potential benefits they could have acquired by concentrating on the best skill.
The world needs masters in specialised fields, not random people. If you are not skilled in a relevant area, attaining the highest level of your career will be challenging. In today’s Bible reading, after Pharaoh had asked for Joseph’s brothers’ professions, he told the prime minister to identify those with “special ability” and make them heads of the best division. Only highly skilled individuals are required at the top to lead others.
Pharaoh’s words to Joseph in Genesis 47:5 are also worthy of note. He said, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, and the land of Egypt is before you.” Joseph, the young foreigner, also attained the top level of authority that made his brethren accountable to him because he had a special gift. He could interpret dreams, which include diligence, administrative skills, and the fear of God.
Beloved, you are set for the top when you focus and invest in your key ability. On the contrary, you may find it tough to achieve tangible success in key areas when you are a jack of all trades. Ask yourself, “What is my occupation?” If you cannot comfortably provide an answer to this, tell the Holy Spirit to guide you in the aspect that will yield the most blessings to you and impact others. God will supply all you need to develop yourself and prosper!
