1 John 3:17-18 (18) – Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (NIV)
Read: 1 Corinthians 10:31; John 13:31–38.
When Christ was to depart, He told the disciples in John 13:31–38 that their love for Him, each other, and their neighbours would reveal the authenticity of their discipleship. This means that their lifestyle must be a revelation of Christ’s love and identity.
Going forward, in John 13:37, Peter expressed his willingness to lay down his life for Christ. But Jesus replied, “Will you really lay down your life for me?” Peter, like many people would think, thought he loved Jesus and could do anything for Him. However, when the test came during Christ’s arrest, Peter denied knowing his master (verse 38).
The test and evidence of love do not consist of the good times only but of both the comfortable and inconvenient moments. As read in today’s text, love is not symbolised in words alone but by action. Talk is cheap and can be empty, just like Peter’s words to Jesus, but the step you take is what makes a difference in love.
Love can be in any shape or form, inasmuch as it is about reaching out. If you truly love someone, you will honour them. Telling the world about Christ is love. Love is also caring and giving without expectation. It is priceless and selfless! Love must be the guiding principle of humanity. Above all, whatever you do, do it for the glory of God.
