Jonah 1:1-16 (15) – Then the sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea, and the storm stopped at once! (NLT)

After Jonah refused God’s directive to go to Nineveh, he boarded a ship from the port of Joppa to Tarshish. On the journey, the Lord caused a terrible wind that threatened to break the ship apart. The sailors were afraid so that they prayed and even threw their loads into the sea to lighten the ship, but all to no avail. Subsequently, the people identified Jonah as the reason for their unrest. As seen in our Bible reading, they threw Jonah down the sea and immediately, the raging sea became calm.

There are complex issues in life, businesses and family that cannot be explained. Many have done all that is humanly possible, but their problems persist. At times, it is because of just one sin or a fellow in their life who is labelled with misfortune. For example, if the sailors did not identify Jonah, they all could have perished. Have you spotted your own Jonah? If no, you may innocently continue to suffer for their sake. We must also eject from our boats the Jonadab-like people that give wrong counsels. In 2 Samuel 13, Jonadab gave Amnon the strategy to rape his sister (Tamar). Eventually, Amnon was killed, but his evil advisor stayed alive.

Beloved, to conclude, examine your boat of association, devotion to God, career, and marriage, or perhaps you are the Jonah and Jonadab in others’ boats? It is time to act, repent and pray. God shall begin to direct your path because you have now made Him your captain.

Hymn: Trust and Obey – John H. Sammis (1887)

1. Every Jonah or Jonadab assigned to rock my boat, get out of (mention).

2. Father, if I am the Jonah or Jonadab, Father, please forgive and cleanse me.

1. I refuse to be a victim of circumstance. My loved ones shall not die nor suffer for the atrocities of others.

2. Holy Spirit, possess me with the power for a new dimension of exploit.

3. I mark myself, my family, and the Church with the blood of Jesus. No plague is permitted in our abode!
