WEAK FATHER, WICKED SONS
Proverbs 13:24 – Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. (ESV)
The story of Eli and his sons presents a great lesson for us. Eli’s sons were rascals who disregarded God. They treated the Lord’s offering with greed and desecrated His temple by sleeping with women. Eli tried to correct his sons but didn’t do enough to firmly rebuke them as a prophet who is responsible for keeping God’s temple and people holy. Eli’s sons refused to listen to their father, and they died in a battle at Aphek. This and other news led to the death of Eli (1 Samuel 2:12-36, 4:12-22).
Every person is responsible for what God places in their hands, whether family, ministry, or possession. There are parents and ministers who have failed in their mandate because they refused to caution their biological and spiritual children. This failure is what gives birth to more of Eli’s sons in our generation. Nowadays, there are open and secret atrocities committed in the Church. The fear of God is gone, and shepherds now keep mute to the sheep’s misbehaviours, so far the ministry is growing. The wrath of God is looming unless we repent!
Beloved, there is a time for warm correction and a period for firm discipline (Hebrews 12:6). Eli’s sons lacked discipline, and they, with their father, paid for it. As seen in our Bible reading, genuine love for our children involves chastising them. When this is done appropriately, it will save you from shame and premature death. This is a wake-up call. Whoever God has put in your care must be nurtured and rebuked when necessary.
