UNREQUITED LOVE IN MARRIAGE

Genesis 2:15-24 (18) – The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (NIV)

Today’s Bible reading reveals that the foundation of marriage lies in the unity between husband and wife. After God kept Adam in the Garden of Eden to work, He saw that the man would be more productive if he had a helper. Therefore, God created the woman from Adam’s rib to be his suitable helper in marriage. In other words, as the man fends for the family, the wife must submit to her husband and support him in every necessary capacity (Ephesians 5:22).

On the man’s part, apart from providing for the family, the main responsibility of the husband is to love his wife. Ephesians 5:25 says, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Christ loved us so much that He suffered persecution and died for our sins. When love is the bedrock, the man will not struggle to commit himself to his wife and perform his duties as the head of the home.

However, where only one person fulfils the marital obligations while the other fails to love or submit, it is “unrequited love.” This type of love is one-sided and not returned in kind. Many couples are indirectly or directly guilty of this act. They have forgotten that each of them should complement one another.

Beloved, we must search our hearts and examine our actions to see where we have been unfaithful in reciprocating love to our spouses. If need be, mend the broken bridges. As a husband, be passionate about your wife and provide for her. Dear wife, respect your man regardless of his status. Above all, if you make God your source, you will understand the basis of marriage and give back in love.

PRAYER

Hymn: God Give Us Christian Homes — Baylus B. McKinney (1991)

1. Father, rekindle Your fire of love in my heart and marriage.

(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)

1. Father, with everything You are known as God, please don’t let me fail in my responsibilities.

2. By the power of God, this week, I prevail over every craftiness of the tempter and temptress.

3. Father, terminate all ungodly activities ongoing in my life, community and the Church.
