UNREQUITED LOVE (2): AGAPE LOVE
Hosea 3:1-5 (2) – So I bought her back for fifteen pieces of silver and five bushels of barley and a measure of wine. (NLT)
Yesterday we learnt about Gomer’s failure to reciprocate the love her husband showed her. Hosea had married Gomer as a prostitute, and they had three children (two sons and a daughter). After weaning the third child, Gomer left the family and returned to adultery. However, as seen in our Bible reading, Hosea pleaded for his wife to come back, and he bought her with a price. This demonstrates how God found us while we were slaves to sin and paid the cost to restore us to Himself (Romans 5:8).
There are different types of love (lustful love, brotherly love, or love of material things), but the example of Hosea and God’s type of love is agape love. This type of love is the greatest sacrificial love that has its foundation in God (John 15:13). Agape love is essential to our relationship with God and man. We can’t relate to God as His children until we realise how much He loves us. When we understand God’s love, it will be easier to replicate it to others. This is what was lacking in Gomer’s life. She didn’t understand true love or accept it, even when Hosea gave her unconditional love. Therefore, she could not love her husband in return.
Beloved, there are dangers when we fail to acknowledge God’s love and man’s genuine love for us because we may continue to languish in obscurity and fall prey to Satan’s scheme. We must daily seek an experience of Christ’s agape love and reciprocate it by loving our neighbours.
PRAYER
Hymn: Jesus Loves Even Me — Philip P. Bliss (1870)
1. Father, help me know how deep Your love is and reciprocate it by loving others.
(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)
1. I decree and declare in the mighty name of Jesus Christ; iniquity shall never abound in my life and destiny.
2. Father, terminate struggle from the dictionary of my life, family, and the Church.
3. Father, show me my strength and weakness and how I must improve to be profitable this year.
