THE WISE VIRGINS
Matthew 25:1-13 (8) – The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ (NIV)
Today’s Bible reading tells the story of ten virgins who were expecting the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish because they took their lamps without oil, while the other five that took jars of oil with their lamps are wise. Consequently, when the bridegroom arrived, the foolish ones’ lamps were off because they lacked oil. Therefore, it was only the wise virgins that made the wedding banquet. What this parable translates to is that we must be prepared and alert for every occasion. For example, the coming of Christ is near, and many have become relaxed so that they are caught unawares as the five foolish virgins (Matthew 24:44).
Do you have exams but refused to study and instead went on dry fasting? Do not worry! You will raise the dead but expect a zero because everything in life needs adequate preparation to achieve outstanding results (2 Timothy 2:15). Similarly, to build a house, you need a concrete foundation, just as you must take risks to start up a business. Are you ready to get married? If yes! Have you made the necessary arrangements for counselling and finance because lack of planning could lead to intolerance and eventual divorce? Even to seek God’s face in prayers (Romans 8:26-27) and to evangelise, we need the Holy Spirit (Act 1:8).
Above all, in all things, set your priorities right, for there is time for everything under the sun (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).
