THE SECRET TO LIFE

Matthew 25:31-46 (36) – I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ (NIV)

A Jewish man who lived in Germany narrated his story as a teenager. He said, on a deathly cold night, the Nazis were killing the Jews, and we were on the train being driven to Auschwitz by the Germans who left us on the sidetracks for days without food and water. We were in hundreds, and there were no blankets to keep warm as the snow fell. The cold winds hit our cheeks, and the blood in our bodies started to freeze. Beside me was an elderly man who was shivering from head to toe.

I wrapped my arms around him tightly to give him some heat. All night, I rubbed his arms, legs and neck. I begged him to try to stay alive. I was tired and cold too, and my fingers were numb, but I didn’t stop rubbing heat into his body. When morning came, all I saw were frozen bodies. All I could hear was deathly silence— the cold night had killed the people. However, only two people survived: the old man and me. The man survived because I kept him warm, and I am alive because I was warming him (Hebrews 13:16).

Beloved, may I tell you the secret to survival in this world? When you warm people’s hearts, you will remain warm. When you support and encourage others, you will also find help and inspiration in your life (Philippians 2:4). Moreover, as seen in our Bible reading, whatever good you do, is done unto God, and that’s the secret to a happy life. This February, intentionally do the good to others and see how pleased the Lord can be about you (2 Corinthians 9:6-7).
