THE PRIDE OF MAN
Genesis 11:1-9 (4) – Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” (NIV)
When the world had a common language, the people wanted to remain as one and do not desire to spread globally. As seen in our Bible reading, they decided to build a tower that reaches the heavens. More so, the society made a prideful statement: ‘so that we may make a name for ourselves.’ No wonder, God confused their speech, and they stopped building the city.
The actions of this generation at the time negated the divine schedule for humanity. God had commanded in Genesis 1:26-28, that we should be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth. But these people wanted to stick together and ‘make a name for themselves’. They were bent on outdoing God’s glory to become more famous. This was similar to Lucifer’s plan to exalt himself above the Lord’s stars (Isaiah 14:12-16; 42:8).
Beloved, the world’s problem began from those eras and continues to haunt us. Man wants to be seen, heard, praised and remembered above God. Whenever we attribute any achievements to our strength, we are taking the glory, and that is pride! Life is not about us but to reflect God’s glory— any attempts against this purpose is rebellion and arrogance (1 Samuel 15:23). Therefore, examine your inner mind and ask for divine mercy, if need be!
