THE PRIDE OF LIFE
1 John 2:15-17 (16) – For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. (NIV)
The pride of life is when we boast about what we do for a living and the benefits that come with it. It could refer to the arrogance derived from being praised for the qualities we possess. The world judges people based on their status— the rich are honoured and the poor, are set aside. But according to our Bible reading, we must not love the world or be moved by its principles because when we dwell on earthly wisdom, pride is bound to set in!
Christ said in Luke 12:15 that, a man’s life does not depend on his possessions, yet, people make wealth a priority and boast of it. Whenever we take pleasure in our skills, body, certificate or bank account, among others earthly glory, it is the ‘pride of life’, and could lead to more sins. For example, taking pride in oneself can lead to trying to ‘make it at all cost’, to impress others. No wonder, Paul said, ‘if anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves…’ (Galatians 6:3-4). He further admonished that whoever compares himself with another, is not wise (2 Corinthians 10:12).
Beloved, are you hypnotised by what the world gives? If yes! Repent now, because the world and its desires will pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever (1 John 2:17). Don’t brag about life but fix your gaze on eternity because therein, lies the reward of our existence.
