THE MYSTERY OF DIVINE PREFERENCE
Matthew 24:40-44 (40) – Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. (NIV)
Out of every set of two or more people, one will likely be preferred than the other(s). We see an example in Genesis 25:29-34, where Esau, the eldest brother, lost his birthright to Jacob, who eventually got their father’s blessings. Likewise, in Genesis 4:3-8, Cain and Abel offered sacrifices to God. Abel gave the best, and heaven honoured his sacrifice!
Today’s Bible reading also gives an account of two people when one shall be taken at the rapture. This is similar to the story of one of the two thieves nailed alongside Jesus, whom even at the point of death, got saved while the other went straight to hell (Luke 23:39-43). Further, in Genesis 40, between Pharaoh’s baker and butler, who were imprisoned, it was the butler who regained freedom while the baker was hanged.
We should learn from the above characters. Esau sold his destiny for a ‘red stew’ (Hebrews 12:16). Cain’s offering was rebuked because he gave unpresentable fruits to God. The rejected crucified thief missed eternity because he criticised Christ while his companion got a free last-minute ticket to heaven. The butler got saved; perhaps because he would be closer to Pharaoh, which was instrumental to Joseph’s release from prison.
Beloved, verses 42-43 of our text, emphasised on ‘keeping watch’. We must be spiritually awake neither to fall behind in our pilgrim’s journey nor, become a party to failure (1 Peter 5:8). With vigilance, holiness and prayer, grace shall position you for divine preference and elevation, in Jesus’ name. Be Born Again!
