THE GREATEST OF ALL THINGS

Hebrews 6:10–12 (10) – God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. (NIV)

Read: 1 Corinthians 3:10–15

Pele of Brazil was buried a few hours ago with a befitting state ceremony. During his prime, Pele terrorised both defenders and goalkeepers with his football skills. He mastered the football craft with such splendour that he mesmerised the world. The Brazilian is considered the best football player of all time, but sooner or later, someone will beat his record and become the best until someone else beats it.

Life is about timing and seasons. Nobody ever stays at the top indefinitely. No matter how exceptional or celebrated a person is, it will never last forever. This is because humans have a short memory of days and events. In Genesis 40:1–23, after Joseph had interpreted the dream that confirmed the butler’s safety from execution, he was forgotten by the same man for two years. This means that the people who sing your praises today may not be there tomorrow. It is only a matter of time before they leave and refer to you as history.

However, as seen in our Bible reading, the only thing that will stand the test of time, both on earth and in eternity, is what is done for God. God does not forget a thing. He recognises and rewards every little effort, even when others do not take note.

Beloved, the new year presents an opportunity to renew your commitment to God and His service. Think of what you would do more and differently to promote God’s interest at home, work, the community, or the Church. Ensure that everything you do counts for eternity because, at the end of it all, making heaven is what matters.

PRAYER

Hymn: Anywhere with Jesus — Jessie B. Pounds (1887)

1. Lord Jesus, help me to spend and be spent for You this year.

(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)

1. Father, please cleanse me of any unrighteous thoughts and actions.

2. Holy Spirit, open my eyes to the secrets I need to know to prosper this year.

3. Any power and circumstance holding my life to ransom, receive a divine solution.

4. My Father, turn me to fire that cannot be touched or manipulated.

5. Any power assigned to silence the voice of my glory and the prosperity of the Church, scatter!
