THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT
John 14:15 – “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (KJV)
Last week, we studied the ‘Ten Commandments’ as given in the Old Testament. It is vital to examine Christ’s perspective on these Commandments. In Matthew 22:34-40, a Pharisee who is a law expert asked Jesus a trickery question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” (v. 36). In response, Jesus summarised the Law in two clear principles. The interesting fact about these two principles is that they originated from the same Law. Christ paraphrased Deuteronomy 6:4-9 for the first principle and Leviticus 19:18 for the second.
Jesus categorised the first three Commandments (which focuses on our relationship with God) into one principle. “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment (v. 37-38). He went further to summarise the remaining seven Commandments, which addresses how we relate to our fellow human beings. He said: And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (v. 40).
Beloved, the principles are linked to each other—Love binds them all. The love for God and humanity is the capsule of the Ten Commandments. As seen in our Bible reading, if you love your creator, you will keep His Laws, and this can only be demonstrated by how you love your neighbours. You must treat people the way you want to be treated. Do you genuinely love your spouse, children, next-door neighbours, foreigners, orphans, widows, the sick and needy, among others? Examine yourself because “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” (1 John 4:20— NIV).
PRAYER
Song: Love The Lord — Lincoln Brewster (2005)
1. Father, help me love You more and demonstrate Your type of love to my community.
(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)
1. Satanic seed of hatred and wickedness germinating in my body, dry up!
2. Father, let my today be greater and my tomorrow be exceedingly glorious.
3. Any power tormenting and harassing me physically and spiritually. Father, judge them!
4. I hijack my life, marriage, friends, nation and the Church from the operations of the spoilers.
