THE GOOD FRIDAY
Luke 23:1-56 (43) – Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (NIV)
On the day we now know as Good Friday, Christ was beaten and ordered to carry the cross, on which He got crucified (John 19). It is, therefore, hard to physically see anything good about Good Friday. In fact, some countries such as Germany call the Good Friday ‘Karfreitag’, meaning: ‘Sorrowful Friday’. Irrespective of what the world terms it, ‘Good Friday’ is very significant because the suffering and death of Christ marked the turning point for humanity!
Satan’s greatest error was to orchestrate Jesus’ crucifixion (even though he had no authority to stop it) because Christ’s resurrection signified triumph over sin (death) and brought the hope of eternal life (John 11:25-27). Therefore, Good Friday symbolises the beginning of our redemption (Romans 5:6-11) and a season of reflection on God’s sacrifice for mankind. Equally, the cross at Calvary signifies mercy, forgiveness and peace (Psalms 85:10). No wonder in our Bible reading, right there at Jesus’ execution, a convicted criminal got saved after he acknowledged Him as the Lord and Saviour.
Beloved, have you been condemned by guilt, sin and people? You can be saved! But, what could yet make the Good Friday a terrible Friday is when we still live in sin because iniquity makes God’s redemptive plan valueless (Proverbs 14:34). Therefore, to enjoy the benefits of salvation and living a life of holiness, you must accept Jesus as Your Lord and saviour. No matter the condemnation, His death and resurrection present you a new life (2 Corinthians 5:17). Jesus is knocking at your door; will you let Him enter? (Revelation 3:20)
