THE DEBT OF LOVE
Romans 13:8 – Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. (NKJV)
Another type of love that we must emulate is the love Christ had for the Church. Jesus loved the Church and gave Himself for her, to present her as a radiant Church without stain, wrinkle or blemish, but holy and blameless. This affection was so vast that Paul used it to symbolise how a man should love his wife. The woman was formed from the man, making them one body. Therefore, a man must be emotionally tied to his wife because he that love his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but feed and nurture their body, just as Christ does the Church (Ephesians 5:22-29).
On the other hand, as the Church submits to Christ, the wife ought to be submissive to her husband in everything. The man has to love, while the woman is to submit to the head (v. 33). In all, love binds both actions together because there is no way one can genuinely love without giving, caring and reverencing the other, or can two work together except they agree? (Amos 3:3).
Love also triggers favour before God and man (Proverbs 3:3-4). This is because people are attracted to a joyous and kindhearted fellow who seek the peace, salvation and happiness of everyone. As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15). The ‘beautiful feet’ here could refer to the divine and human favour that comes through our compassion for others. In conclusion, as seen in our Bible reading, we are indebted to love one another in the same way Jesus loved us. Let’s shun hatred, leave the past and show love with action. By this, the world will come to the light of Christ.
