1 John 4:1-6 (1) – Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (NIV)
Just as one would ensure the size of a costume fits, so are we to verify the right spirit, because there are diverse spirits from God or the devil. In other words, no man or church can be empty; it is either they are possessed of the Holy Spirit or satanic spirits. However, the tragic fact is that those who are led by Satan, perform similar miracles as the pure in spirit (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12).
We saw a good example in Acts 16:16-22, where Paul and Silas met a slave girl who had a spirit with which she accurately prophesied. She and her masters deceived the people and made huge money, but Paul discerned and cast out the evil spirit in her. If Paul did not ‘test the spirits’, he would have been cajoled by the lady who even testified that himself and Silas were servants of God.
Beloved, there are churches that call ‘Jesus’ but are not of God (Matthew 7:15-23). Some prophets can dictate your history, while a gospel musician can sing like angels and yet be powered by Beelzebub, because ‘the gifts and calling of God are without repentance’ (Romans 11:29). Therefore, these are end times, and the more reason we must examine every spirit as our Bible reading cautions. However, we cannot detect the truth without having the Holy Ghost (Romans 8:16-17). When we submit to Him, we will identify every contrary spirit!
Hymn: Take Time to Be Holy – William D. Longstaff (1882)
1. Father, possess me with Your Spirit and power!
1. Holy Spirit! Open my eyes and ears.
2. Lord, deliver my family, neighbours, and the church from every embarrassing situation.
