TEN COMMANDMENTS (2)

James 1:22
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (ESV)

  1. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

When we misuse any of God’s names, we dishonour Him (Psalms 139:20-21). Similarly, any disobedience to divine principles or failure to acknowledge Christ’s lordship amounts to taking God for granted. Are you that fellow who would call God’s name to cajole and make others believe you? Stop it! It is a sin (Leviticus 19:12). God is not a magician. His name is spiritual and a strong tower of salvation (Proverbs 18:10). Use it wisely in faith!

  1. Keep the Sabbath day holy.

The Sabbath day is the seventh day of the week. This day should be for rest and worship because at creation, God worked for six days and relaxed on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3). There have been several debates about the true day of worship. Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. (Colossians 2:16-17).

The most important thing is the gospel (Jesus Christ). Ensure that you don’t forsake the assembly of the righteous (Hebrews 10:25). Honour God wholeheartedly because He is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23-24—NIV).

  1. Honour your father and your mother.

This commandment is the first with a promise (long life — Exodus 20:12). The parents here don’t necessarily refer only to our biological parents, but also include our spiritual parents and the elders (Ephesians 6:1-3, 1 Timothy 5:1-4). If you want to grow old in health, respect, obey and take care of your parents. By so doing, you are keeping the Lord’s commands (Colossians 3:20).

Beloved, these commandments are there to be obeyed. As seen in our Bible reading, don’t deceive yourself to be hearers alone, but you should actually follow God’s instructions. How much do you value the name of the Lord, worship Him in Spirit and truth, and heeded to your parents good counsels? Check yourself and if need be, repent and talk to God. May He have compassion on us, in Jesus’ name. Amen!

PRAYER

Hymn: Trust and Obey — John H. Sammis (1887)

  1. Father, I restate that I am the work of Your hands. Please, forgive my negligence to Your precepts.

(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)

  1. Give quality worship and thanksgiving to God.
  2. Pray in the Holy Ghost as long as you are led.

IT SHALL BE WELL WITH YOU!
