STEADFAST PRAYER AND THANKSGIVING
Luke 18:1-8 (3) – In that city there was also a widow who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice.’ (GW)
A child asked for a biscuit from his parent, who initially felt reluctant, but as he pleaded persistently, the father had no choice than to succumb. The boy never stopped showing gratitude—as he ate the biscuits, he gave thanks, and without further request, he received more. This is similar to when we pray. Our Bible reading gave an illustration of a widow who needed justice so that she would disturb the judge, who neither feared God nor man.
One day, the judge said to himself, ‘if I do not answer this woman, she will keep troubling me’. Note that, the judge does not know God or cared about people; yet, he was fair to the widow. How much more our God, whom Christ affirmed that He would give His people ‘speedy justice’ when they call (v. 8a). How glorious and reassuring. Hallelujah!
Beloved, the Lord knows our worries, secret tears, prayers and fasting, and He is working things out! (Isaiah 55:7-13). But, are we persistent enough like the widow? Remember, Jesus asked whether He will find faith when He returns (v. 8b). In other words, it is only those who have faith (wait), that enjoy answered prayers (Psalm 27:14). Moreover, when we experience the testimony, we must thank God consistently as that child did, because ‘thanksgiving is the secret for more’.
PRAYER
Hymn: He will Answer every Prayer — Mary Bernstecher (1914)
1. Lord, please give me the passion for prayer, the faith to wait and be thankful.
(THE MIDNIGHT PRAYER)
1. Holy Spirit, please inspire me for glorious generational success.
2. Loads of darkness placed on my head and that of my household and neighbours, catch fire!
3. As individuals, family, nation and the church, we refuse to be beggars amid abundance.
