Matthew 6:20 – But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. (NIV)

Read: Matthew 6:19-34

It is so pathetic that a lot of people place priority on wealth and influence when, actually, after they leave this world, their money will still be lying in the bank. The hard but truthful part is that those who have no idea how the money was earned will comfortably spend it.

There was a story of a tycoon who died with $1.9 billion in his account. His widow, who could not cope with loneliness, eventually got married to his driver. After the wedding, the man said, “All the while, I thought I was working for my boss, but now I realise my boss was working for me!”

Beloved, while it is good to get rich, living for God is more valuable than depending on earthly possessions, as seen in today’s Bible reading. Proverbs 23:5 also says, “In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.” This is another reason you must build a relationship with God and not focus on material things. As you make a living, you should never forget that nothing will be taken with you when you die except what is done for Christ that will stand.

This year, be wise and strategic and deliberately live for whatever matters to God. Nurture your soul, and let all you do showcase the glory of Christ. Through these, you are storing up treasures for yourselves in heaven.

Hymn: Take My Life and Let It Be – Frances Ridley Havergal (1874)

1. Father, please make me prudent in living in honour of You!

1. Father, grant me victory over every battle that is attached to my destiny this year.

2. Father, throughout 2023, please water my life like a tree planted by the riverside.

3. Father, possess me, my family, and the Church with divine wisdom to operate this season.
