RELIABLE FRIENDSHIP
Proverbs 18:24 – One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (NIV)
It is said that when all is rosy and the going is smooth, people will want to identify with your success. But when the chips are down, family and friends disappear. The Bible makes this clear in Proverbs 19:4, that “Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend.” This scripture reflects the experience of Job after he was afflicted by the devil. In Job 2:8–10, Job’s wife, who was supposed to encourage her husband, advised him to curse God and die. In the face of difficulty, the woman compromised her marital commitment by speaking unwisely. However, Job quickly cautioned his wife.
There is no reliable relationship without God’s involvement and human effort. The absence of these is what brings disunity, whether in marriage, community or at work. Since God is love, He is the foundation and strength of any trustworthy friendship (1 John 4:16). If you already have good friends, exalt the Lord for this blessing. People must also value their friendship by being kind-hearted and responsible for one another. On the other hand, if you have unfaithful friends, beware not to be induced into destruction. As seen in our Bible reading, an unsteady friendship can cause harm to one’s plan and destiny. Be careful of friends like Job’s wife who condemn or leave you during your rocky season.
Beloved, if you desire a divinely enduring friendship, pray about it, and first show generosity to others by sticking with them more than a brother will do. By this, the world will know that you are a Christian (John 13:35).
