Proverbs 16:18 – Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. (NIV)
Pride is a feeling of deep pleasure from one’s achievements, qualities or possessions. As seen in our Bible reading, one of the signs of an imminent fall is self-importance. Whenever you find an arrogant fellow, you can be sure of their slide from glory. We saw the example of Satan in Isaiah 14:12-15 when he was relegated after he said in his heart:
‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north… (NLT)
Indeed, God resists the proud, but if we understand that there is nothing, we possess that is not given from above, perhaps we would be meek (1 Corinthians 4:7). No matter our cuteness, wealth, talents, popularity and accolades, we must be subject to the giver of all things because He can decide to close our chapter such as of the rich fool (Proverbs 16:5). This man achieved so much but failed to honour God, and his soul was taken away! (Luke 12:16-21).
Beloved, what are the attributes of pride you exhibit? If any or in case, you are unaware! You need to set the Holy Spirit as a mirror to reveal yourself to you because, in Christ, the way up is down (Matthew 20:26-28). To enjoy divine grace and permanent promotion, humility is necessary (James 4:6). Therefore, accept Jesus today— talk to Him about the act and fruits of pride in you. He will set you free!
Song: I Give Myself Away – William McDowell
1. Every iota of pride in me, Holy Spirit, please terminate it.
1. In whatever I have placed my confidence over God, Lord, deliver me!
2. Father, more than ever, please reign in my life, family, nation and the church.
3. By the blood of Jesus, I cancel the plan of shame and untimely death, organised for me.
