OBEDIENCE IS LIFE
Exodus 20:12 – “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. (NIV)
A sparrow was advised by its parents to join the host of sparrows heading for the warmer southern region. But the sparrow rejected the advice. When winter came, the naughty bird could not cope, and it decided to flee the region. Two hours into migration, the weather worsened, and the bird’s feathers froze. Eventually, the sparrow fell to the cold ground and began panting for its last breath when, all of a sudden, a horse pooed on it.
The bird was annoyed, but the horse’s poo warmed its wings, and they regained strength. While enjoying the warmth, the sparrow started singing loudly. As the bird continued, a cat who heard the melody took the bird out of the poo and cleaned it. However, just as the bird was rejoicing, thinking that another helping hand had arrived, the cat ate it!
Beloved, as seen in today’s Bible reading, don’t neglect your parents’ advice and the people that care about your success. Simply obeying divine instructions given through the scriptures, God’s representatives and your parents can save you from suffering or destruction (1 Samuel 15:22). Wherever you have disobeyed, quickly make amends and pray for mercy so you can enjoy the promise of a long life. Finally, take note that not everyone who shits on you is your enemy, and not everyone who gets you out of trouble is your friend. Be careful and discerning!
1. Father, I desire long life and health. Please, help me obey You and follow the counsel of my parents.
Hymn: Trust and Obey – John H. Sammis (1887)
1. Problems assigned to mock me, you are a liar, die!
2. Father, perform Your surgery in my life, family, nation, and the church to cleanse us from affliction.
3. Alone with God (Cry out for mercy, humility and wisdom).
YOU WILL LAUGH LAST
