MENTORSHIP BY EXPERIENCE

2 Timothy 1:8 – So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. (NIV)

There are valuable lessons to learn from Paul’s second letter to Timothy. A vital lesson is about Paul’s mentorship qualities. Timothy was a young pastor at the church in Ephesus for four years while Paul was in prison when he wrote these words to support and encourage him in the trying times.

A mentor is a selfless and trusted adviser. Paul played his role as a spiritual mentor despite his imprisonment. He showed the original quality of mentorship in lifestyle and action. 2 Corinthians 11:26–28 reveals some of Paul’s personal challenges. He faced dangers on the land, sea and from the people. Sometimes he had no food, water and shelter, yet he was devoted to the gospel. This was why he had the confidence to encourage Timothy in today’s Bible reading, because “you can only genuinely guide others based on your experience.”

Beloved, regardless of your circumstances, always remember that you must be an embodiment of courage to the younger ones and the unbelievers. Whatever you are going through today is for the betterment of your Christian journey and the mentoring of others. Mentorship is not by title; it requires intentionally guiding the mentees. And the mentees must be loyal and adhere to the leading of God through the scriptures and the mentor, just as Timothy was faithful.

PRAYER

Song: Ancient Words – Lynn DeShazo (2001)

1. Father, help me to be a genuine role model to nurture myself, others and save souls.

(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)

1. Arrester of my soul, fruitfulness, promotion, testimony and good things in my life. Be arrested!

2. Every problem taking away my peace and rest, be laid to rest!

3. Father, confuse the tongues of the enemies of Your people and the church and let them fight themselves to destruction.

OVERFLOWING JOY
