LOYALTY AND VIRTUE
2 Timothy 1:2 – To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. (NIV)
In today’s Bible reading, Paul referred to Timothy as “my dear son”. This level of relationship can only be earned through Timothy’s loyalty to Apostle Paul. If Timothy was not dedicated to his mentor, he might have gone astray, especially when Paul was in prison. Those who excel exceedingly in life, career, or ministry are faithful learners who adhere to God’s principles in the scriptures and through their mentor’s guidance.
There are certain qualities that a genuine mentee must demonstrate. Paul said to Timothy, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7). This confirms that the Holy Spirit is the custodian and giver of virtues. Timothy was a young minister, and he needed courage and other qualities to excel in ministry. Therefore, Paul reminded him of the gifts of the Holy Spirit impartation he received through the laying of hands (2 Timothy 1:6). When we have the Holy Spirit as our guide, we can possess His virtues in increasing measures.
Beloved, what qualities do you have that can take you through that project or ministerial work? You need the qualities that will enable you to fan your gift into flames. In every assignment, boldness and self-discipline are vital. Cut down on your excessive sleep and equip yourself for the task. How you spend your time determines your success. Power and love are also essential. If you want power, you must invest more in fasting, prayer, and studying the word. Above all, love will endear you to God’s assignment and your vision for the people.
