JOE THE BIDEN

Job 42:10-17 (10) – After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes and doubled his previous possessions. (CSB)

Joe Biden, the US new President-Elect, has on his desk a framed cartoon featuring Hagar the Horrible. The cartoon created by American cartoonist Dik Browne has a bearded man who was stranded on a rock and blasted by a violent storm as his ship sinks into the sea. ‘Why me?’ he shouted to God. And, God immediately replied: ‘Why not?’ This cartoon, though funny, is treasured by Joe Biden because of the message behind it.

On December 18, 1972, Joe lost his first wife, Neilia and infant daughter, Amy, in a road accident. His other two sons survived with severe injuries though one of them, Beau, died of brain cancer in 2015. Joe’s father bought the framed cartoon for Joe after he recognised that he was losing faith. The cartoon portrays that there is no way to explain what has occurred. It can happen to anyone, anytime (John 16:33). But if we don’t get up, it will crush us! Therefore, Joe turned his grief to strength and became a channel of comfort to other heartbroken people (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

Beloved, Joe’s life recalls the story of Job in our Bible reading. Job was afflicted and lost everything, including his children. Nevertheless, he never gave up, even when his wife told him to curse God and die! (Job 2:8-10). What circumstance has befallen you that you have been asking ‘Why me, Lord?’ Whatever it is! Put your trust in the Lord (Proverbs 3:5-6). He knows everything and will not allow you to be tempted more than you can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). As he restored Job and helped Joe Biden, He shall be your light in the tunnel.
