GUARD YOUR HEART
Proverbs 4:23-27 (23) – Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (NIV)
The truth about our existence is that whatever we do is a function of our hearts. Studying the lives of the Pharisees, they were religiously perfect, yet they were hypocrites (Matthew 23). These people tend to follow principles, but inwardly they had ulterior motives. This is similar to Judas Iscariot’s story. He was Christ’s disciple, but his heart was full of greed (Luke 22:3). We also need to examine the condition of our hearts and actions in these contemporary times.
Are you the fellow who dislike others but pretend to show love (Matthew 22:36-40)? At work and in the community, you are known for the negatives (envy, pride, malice, and immorality), but in Church, you disguise lifting holy hands (Psalms 50:16). To every soul that passes, you have their records and judge them, yet you have not removed the plank in your own eyes (Ephesians 4:29; Luke 6:37-42). Many believe you are a shepherd, but you know you are a wolf (1 John 4:1-6). You may be the most generous, but the purpose for your giving is for glory-seeking (Luke 8:17; 12:2-3).
Beloved, have you discovered any faulty rhythms in your heart? Matthew 12:34 says, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. If your mind is dirty, your fruits would be filthy (Matthew 7:16-20). The solution to a contaminated heart is repentance and infilling of the Holy Spirit. When the heart is purified, righteousness flows naturally (Mark 7:15). The next vital action to take is found in today’s Bible reading: “Guard your heart…”. If you can watch what you conceive in your mind, it will be easier to conform to God’s pattern. To guard is to be genuine in every right action and do it to God’s glory! (1 Corinthians 10:31). As you surrender yourself to Jesus, He shall mould you into perfection (Matthew 5:48).
