GOD OF THE ODD SHOES

1 John 3:1-10 (1A) – Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! (NKJV)

A boy was asked to paint a picture of the Prodigal Son. He worked passionately to produce an image worthy of telling the story. This is the description of his painting: The scene was set outside the father’s house, showing the open arms of the father and son as they were about to hug. The man who delegated the work was very pleased and wanted to pay the boy when he noticed something that looked like a mistake on the artwork. Visibly showing in the picture was the father wearing one red shoe and another blue shoe on the other foot. “Unbelievable. How could the painter have made such an error?” said the man. He then asked the lad, and the boy smiled and said:

“I intentionally sketched this because it is a beautiful illustration of the love of God for His children. The father in this picture was not interested in being colour-coordinated or fashion-conscious when he went out to meet his son (Luke 15:11-32 (v. 20). He was in such a hurry to show his love and quickly grabbed the nearest shoes he could find. He is the God of the ‘Odd Shoes’.” (John 3:16).

In our Bible reading, God calls us His children because He loves us not just by words but in action (1 John 4:16). He created us in His image and redeemed us from sin because He does not desire that we perish (Romans 5:8). As learnt from the painting of the Prodigal Son, regardless of our filthiness, God is always ready to receive us when we repent. If you have fallen to sin, forsake your ways and return to the Father. He will give you a new beginning (2 Corinthians 5:17). Peradventure, you are going through difficult times; know that the Lord is nearer than you think (Psalms 34:18). He is a sure friend. If you tell all to Jesus, He shall hear you and grant you peace that lasts forever (Philippians 4:7).
