GIFTS vs. FRUITS
Galatians 5:22-23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (NIV)
A gift is a present given willingly to a person who does not have to pay for it or show the ability to use it. On the other hand, fruit is the product of a healthy tree. Let’s look at it from another angle. The spiritual gift is like a Christmas or birthday present, while the fruit of the Spirit is evidence of a person’s hard work, such as the skills acquired from a job. In 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, Paul listed the gifts of the Spirit as wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discernment, diverse tongues, and interpretation of tongues, while the spiritual fruits can be seen in today’s Bible reading.
God decides the gift He gives to everyone so they can use it to help others (1 Corinthians 12:7). However, spiritual fruits can only be produced by those who have crucified their flesh and walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:24-25). This indicates that both the gifts and the fruits are vital, but the fruits are more significant because they are proof of a person’s Godly character.
Beloved, every man and woman has a gift or ministry (Romans 11:29), but not everyone has the fruits of the Spirit. You can pray for the gift but not for the fruit because it is a product of your intimacy with God. The spiritual gifts without the fruits of the Spirit may contaminate the gifts. Therefore, instead of paying attention to the growth of your ministry or the potency of your anointing, focus more on loving and bringing peace to others. The world is blessed, and Jesus is glorified more when we bear the fruits of the Spirit.
Hymn: Take My Life and Let It Be – Frances R. Havergal (1874)
1. Father, as I use my gifts for You, help me to live by the Spirit to become fruitful.
1. Spend quality time asking for the grace to please God and serve Him.
