EXAMINE YOUR AFFECTION!
Colossians 3:5 – Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: (KJV)
Read: Romans 8:35–39; Colossians 3:1–17.
Inordinate affection refers to the priority or obsessive passion devoted to things other than God. In today’s Bible reading, Paul admonishes that every child of God must put to death all manner of sins, including inordinate affection.
Excessive love for humans is a sin, but it is often overlooked because it is considered a common way of life. Many believers now revere their pastors more than Christ and respect musicians more than their creator. But Exodus 20:3 says, “You shall have no other gods before Me”. There is only one God, and the path to Him is Jesus Christ. Whatever or whoever takes His place is an idol.
There are people who idolise material possessions like money, their family, jewelry, sex, football, and property. All these will vanish, except for what is done for God. The Lord will never share His glory with anything. Whatever item is valued more than its maker lures a person into danger and causes them to sin against God.
Beloved, are you nursing any affection contrary to God’s standard? The remedy is to put everything about you and your thoughts under the subjection of the Holy Spirit. Make practical steps to rid yourself of secret gods in your life or your passion for the world. Let nothing separate you from the love of God, and it shall be well with you!
Hymn: Day by Day, Dear Lord — Richard of Chichester (1197–1253)
1. Holy Ghost, terminate every one of my extravagant affections for things that negate God’s pattern.
1. Father, crush any potential early-life, mid-life, or old-age crisis in my life.
2. Father, please open the eyes of my heart to discern what You want me to see.
3. Father, make me spiritual and never carnally minded.
HEAVEN SHALL ARISE FOR YOUR SAKE
