Luke 5:1-7 (5) – Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” (NIV)

Read: Proverbs 3:3-8

On an occasion when I played football with some British, I was often shouting, “Don’t force the ball”. This meant that the player who is in possession of the ball should pass it to the closest teammate rather than make a long pass, which could allow the opponent to intercept the play. However, the guys saw the funny side of it and soon nicknamed me “Mr Don’t Force the Ball.”

Many people are victims of the aimlessness of the heart and the wrong purpose in life. This leads them to force their ways through issues and channels not authorised by God. In today’s Bible reading, Peter relied on his fishing experience and toiled all night with nothing to show for it. If he had not encountered Christ at that moment, he would have left empty for home. It was the direction that Jesus gave Peter that made a difference and qualified him for a net-breaking miracle.

Beloved, in the same way I shouted to the boys, “Don’t force the ball” this year. Don’t push anyone into loving or marrying you. You are worth far more. Allow God to fix you in the right relationship! Stop using human calculation in that job, business, study, ministry, or how you will survive. Instead, commit all your plans and circumstances to the mighty hands of God, because those who put everything in God’s hands will see His hand in everything. Just as Peter listened to Christ’s instruction to let down the nets, make it your priority to hear God and obey Him. The Holy Spirit will guide you and straighten your crooked paths, in the mighty name of Jesus.

Hymn: He Leadeth Me – Joseph H. Gilmore (1862)

1. Father, I have no power of my own. Please, this year:

A. Empower me and order my steps by Your Holy Spirit.

B. Rescue me from every impending storm.

1. Father, please give me the grace and the resources I need to feed and dress well.

2. Is God a liar? If no! Begin to ask for specific hard things you desire before the weekend.

3. Any power working day and night in order to damage my reputation, receive divine judgement.

4. Father, please arise for the Church and instil Your love in our gathering.
