CHICAGO FIRE!

John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (NIV)

When Jesus was about to leave, He began to tell the disciples the things that would happen thereafter. His statement in today’s Bible reading summarises the life of Horatio Spafford, the man who wrote the evergreen hymn “It is Well with My Soul”. This successful lawyer lost his property investments in the Chicago fire incident in October 1871. Two years later, all of his four daughters perished in a ship disaster. Despite these tragedies, Horatio and his wife never gave up their faith in God. Instead, they invested more in missionary work.

The truth about life is that challenges will certainly arise and there may be temptations from every corner. But there is an assurance of victory in Jesus. This was Paul’s testimony in 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 where he said, “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed”, but always show forth the glory of Jesus.

Beloved, whatever it is you are faced with, stand firm in whom you believe and be encouraged by Horatio Spafford’s story. Never compromise at any time, but remain active in prayer, keep eating the Word, and persevere like Paul. You will wear the crown of glory at last.

PRAYER OF DECREE

Hymn: It Is Well with My Soul – Horatio G. Spafford (1873)

I (name) refuse to be crushed on my journey of salvation. I will keep praying and moving, and come what may, the grace, power, and joy of the Lord shall be my strength. So, help me, God!

(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)

1. Father, please do not turn Your back from helping me. Send complete help to me!

2. Father, inspire those in authority and those assigned to help me to act without delay.

3. Father, take away every inferiority or superiority complex from my life.

YOUR DAY IS BLESSED!
