Romans 1:16 – For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile. (NLT)

Peter Cartwright, a fiery revival preacher, was famous for his candid words. In 1830, he was preaching near Washington D.C. when the church heard that the American president would be visiting. So they said to Mr Cartwright, ‘Listen, the president is coming on Sunday and we want you to tone down your words. We don’t want to upset the president.’

On Sunday, the president was in attendance, and Mr Cartwright’s first sentences were, ‘I understand that the president of the United States, Andrew Jackson, is with us. I have been asked to be guarded in my remarks. But the truth is, Mr Jackson, will go to hell if he doesn’t repent.’ The church was shocked, but after the service, the president grabbed Mr Cartwright’s hand, shook it and said, ‘Sir, if I had an army of men like you I could drive the world.’

Beloved, the world is terribly sick and we need men like Peter Cartwright because the ‘feel good’ gospel has not helped us! People may not like you for speaking the truth, but one day, they will reckon with the word of God (Hebrews 4:12). Therefore, as seen in our Bible reading, let’s imitate Paul, who boldly declared the gospel in the face of animosity. Do not live for the approval of men otherwise, you’ll die by their rejection. When the world wants you to tone it down, take it higher!

Hymn: More About Jesus — Eliza E. Hewitt (1887)

1. Father, help me to meditate and speak Your word, boldly.

1. Thank You, Lord, for my life and daily bread.

2. Father, please pardon me for any falsehood and men-pleasing character in me.

3. Father, please pour out Your spirit upon us afresh as individuals and the church.
