THE SHEPHERD
Psalm 23:1-3 (1) – The LORD is my shepherd. I am never in need. (GW)
Read: Hebrews 13:20–21
A shepherd continuously refreshes the sheep on the green pasture. The parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15:1–7 makes it clear that God cares intimately for each of His sheep, regardless of their numbers. John 10:11–18 gives an understanding of Christ as the good shepherd, while the saved are the sheep. This is what David referred to in today’s Bible reading. As long as he remained under the shepherd’s covering, he was spiritually and physically secured.
As the sheep follows the shepherd and resides on the green pasture, it can never lack shelter. Paul testified to the sureness of God’s ability to provide for all human desires. Philippians 4:19 says, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Psalm 23:2–3 also confirms that God will ensure that His children enjoy rest when He lays them down in the pasture. Even when the world is raging, the shepherd leads the abiding sheep along peaceful waters, restoring them and guiding them in righteousness.
However, to qualify as a sheep, there is a requirement. Hebrews 13:20–21 indicates that Jesus, the great shepherd, will equip those who do His will with good things. Certainly, none of God’s children can be deprived of the shepherd’s blessings if they obey His commands. But if anyone is on the other side, the end will be destruction. Beloved, I encourage you to repent and accept Christ so that you can begin to enjoy the dividends of a sheep (sonship).
