Luke 12:13-21 (19)
And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” (NIV)
Read: 1 Corinthians 9:27
The motive to embark on a project or to acquire a possession will determine how well you utilise them when they happen. Often, unseasoned intentions and lifestyles lead to complacency and disaster. The issue with the rich fool in today’s text did not all start suddenly but was within the mind long before wealth came. Christ’s statement in verse 15 reveals the root of the man’s problem: “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed.” The greedy motive was what led the rich man to his destruction.
A man had prayed for a breakthrough for years, only to acquire a power bike to oppress the community when money came. Unfortunately, he died after drunkenly speeding into a moving truck and died. Another sister was a prayer warrior and devoted evangelist who won many souls. However, after gaining university admission, she became a party animal. Later, her introduction to drugs led her to the psychiatric hospital.
The brother and the sister’s motive for success was fleshy. Therefore, they could not guard against insensitive ambitions when the breakthrough occurred. When all you prayed for eventually manifests, your intention and the ground of your heart will determine your longevity in God’s blessings. What blessings are you enjoying—international open doors, marital breakthroughs, or career progression? Revisit your motive and disposition towards what God has done for you and make amends where necessary. This way, you will not trigger your destruction!
