LOYALTY AND VIRTUES
2 Timothy 1:2 – To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. (NIV)
Read: 2 Timothy 1:1-7
In the Bible text for today, Apostle Paul referred to Timothy as his dear son. Timothy could only have earned this level of relationship through his loyalty to Paul. If not for Timothy’s dedication to God and his mentor, he would have gone astray, especially when Paul was away in prison. Those who excel in life, career, or ministry are faithful learners who adhere to God’s principles in the scriptures and through their mentor’s guidance.
There are certain qualities that a mentee must demonstrate in order to develop. Timothy was a young minister who needed courage and other qualities to excel. Therefore, Paul told him, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.” He further reminded Timothy to use the gifts of the Holy Spirit imparted to him through the laying on of hands.
Beloved, when you have the Holy Spirit and a worthy mentor as your guide, you can possess the virtues of boldness, power, love, and self-discipline in increasing measure. These qualities will enable you to fan your gifts into flames and take you through your projects or ministerial work successfully.
In every assignment, the type of loyalty that Timothy had to Paul, including boldness and self-discipline, is vital. How you spend your time determines your success. If need be, cut down on your excesses. Spiritual empowerment and love are also essential. If you want power, invest more in fasting, prayer, and studying the Word. Love will also endear you to God’s vision for the people and help you lead them righteously. All of these can be developed and maintained through self-discipline. May the Almighty God grant you the understanding to adhere and the grace to cultivate these virtues. Amen!
