LESSONS FROM DEBORAH
Judges 4:4 – And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. (KJV)
Read: Judges 4:4-10
The Bible records that Deborah was a prophetess, a wise judge, and a woman of influence. Her story teaches us to use our capabilities and gifts to serve God in this generation. The Canaanites held the Israelites captive for about 20 years. In Deborah’s office as a prophetess, she instructed Barak to go to war and that he would be victorious. However, the man decided not to act on God’s word, prompting Deborah to take crucial action.
Deborah reminded Barak of God’s word at a time when he was reluctant. The woman encouraged Barak—without criticising him for his inaction—to go to battle. A vessel of influence like Deborah does not focus on people’s weaknesses but on the good, thereby helping them develop their full potential.
Deborah was fearless and not intimidated by their enemies. When Barak eventually accepted to go to war with Deborah on his side, the woman of God never hesitated because she was equipped and had received a word of assurance from God. Deborah, as a judge, also gave wise counsel to the people of Israel and made righteous judgements. Due to her reliance on divine principles and inspiration, people trusted her verdict.
Whoever would be influential must be motivated by God’s word, not by people’s opinions. As the Lord inspired Deborah, she did not only stay true to His word; she also invited others to trust in God and live up to their full potential as she used her influence to establish the truth among the Israelites. Beloved, what is God saying to you, and what would be your response in this season and generation? Be a Deborah and the actor according to God’s instructions.
PRAYER
Hymn: Christian, seek not yet repose — Charlotte Elliott (1836)
1. Father, release into my hands all I need to navigate and excel in my generation.
(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)
1. Father, let every battle rising against me cease now!
2. Father, please turn the counsel of the aggressor into foolishness and my favour.
3. I receive the grace to be a Deborah and a warrior for God in my season.
GOD BLESS YOU!
