THE DANGER OF ENVY
James 3:14-16 (15)
For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. (NIV)
Read: John 3:30
There is a natural tendency for a person to feel unhappy with others when they appear to be doing better. This is why genuine children of God need to guard their hearts against ungodly thoughts. The failure to do this can lead to the manifestation of the flesh, such as envy.
One of the characteristics of envy is that it makes people crave another person’s entitlement unduly. More so, as evidenced in today’s Bible text, envy can lead to chaos, lawlessness, and more serious sins. For instance, greed and envy caused the first recorded bloodshed in the scriptures. In Genesis 4:1-16, Cain killed his brother after God rejected his unbefitting offering and accepted that of Abel. Thereafter, Cain suffered the wrath of God till death.
Beloved, whether you are an elder, manager, pastor, spouse, or individual, be cautious of greed and envy because they have no better ending than destruction. Focus on your own destiny and emulate the likes of John, who was older than Jesus yet gave Him the necessary support to excel. Even if you are the youngest in the family or a junior staff member in the workplace, shun jealousy and be happy with others in their time of celebration. You will discover that sooner than you imagined, your time of elevation will come.
PRAYER
Hymn: Jesus Saves — Priscilla J. Owens (1882)
1. Father, please remove all forms of evil from my heart (e.g., envy, pride, and malice).
(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)
1. Any power that needs to die in order for me to progress—die now by fire!
2. Father, please destroy the gathering of the wicked against my life, nation, and the Church!
3. Personalities and powers assigned to deceive me spiritually, maritally, and financially. Be silenced!
