SERVE YOUR MASTER
Romans 13:1-8 (5) – Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. (NIV)
Read: Philippians 2:12
The Book of 2 Kings 2:1-15 records Elisha’s diligence in serving Elijah till he got the double portion of his anointing. During his prime, Elisha also had a servant (Gehazi) who ought to possess his mantle. However, Gehazi’s greed robbed him of what could have made him twice as powerful as Elisha (2 Kings 5:20-27) and quadruple anointed like Elijah. Instead, what he got with his descendants was the disease of leprosy.
The story of Gehazi sums up Judas Iscariot’s attitude, leading to his betrayal of Christ. The Bible had labelled Judas a thief before he betrayed Jesus. In John 12:3-5, after Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive oil, Judas said, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” But verse 6 clarifies that Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor. He said it because he lusted after the money.
People today yearn for God to use them powerfully but are hesitant to bear the costs. Several aspiring youths and assistants to worthy leaders have missed their paths due to anti-Christlike behaviours. They are arrogant and are quick to emerge before maturing because they fail to heed Paul’s admonition in today’s Bible text that respect must be given to people in authority.
There is a process in everything! Even in John 14:12, where Christ said, “Greater works than this shall you do”, He stresses the place of unity between Him and His Father in verses 9-11. In other words, before you reach the level God intends for you, you must smoothen your bond with Him and serve your earthly superiors diligently. Don’t be like Gehazi and Judas, who found themselves on the negative side of history through unholy behaviours.
ACTION POINT
1. Correct your weak points and fearfully work out your salvation with obedience.
(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)
1. Father, help me never to overlook the defining processes and moments of my life.
2. Every mandate of hell to make me fall and fail—scatter by fire!
3. Lord Jesus, terminate pride, greed, lusts, and anxiety in my life and let the Holy Spirit dwell in me afresh.
