DO NOT GET TOO FAMILIAR
Luke 17:11-19 (18) – Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” (NIV)
Read: Ephesians 5:21-33; Romans 8:6-11
To be familiar with people is a friendly gesture, especially when it’s for a worthy cause. On the other hand, when you get overfamiliar with a thing or an individual, they eventually become boring or unoriginal to you. In today’s Bible focus, Jesus healed ten men with leprosy, but only one of them returned to express gratitude. This one fellow was a stranger (Samaritan), while others were possibly Jews who were too familiar with Christ and could not see reasons to specifically honour Him!
There are several ways by which people become over-familiar. Many become too casual with their spouse, children, parents, and friends to the extent that they refuse to value them as they should. Some have become too familiar with their problems and have not sought solutions, whether through the scriptures or medically. People also over-familiarise themselves with life and become complacent with their goals and drives for success (Proverbs 10:4-6).
Beloved, many Christians also tend to underestimate God, perhaps due to their belief that He is a loving Father who will not impose His will on others. However, the danger is that these people may not get blessed, especially because they have become too familiar with God’s Word and the Bible; thus, they are not open to fresher revelation of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:6-16).
WHAT NOW?
Refuse to get overfamiliar with God, people, or yourself, so you don’t lose your focus and become proud, losing your reward, such as the other nine lepers were not made whole!
PRAYER
Hymn: I Need Thee Every Hour – Annie S. Hawks & Robert Lowry (1872)
1. Father, grant me the wisdom to be sensitive to know how/what to do, always!
(THE MIDNIGHT PRAYER)
1. Scars of the past, affecting my today and tomorrow, disappear!
2. Arrows of affliction, pride, and powerlessness, fired into my life, family, and the Church; get out now!
3. Pray for others and yourself as led by the Holy Spirit!
