BOXING DAY: A LEGACY OF KINDNESS
Acts 20:35b – It is more blessed to give than to receive. (NIV)
Read: Luke 6:38
Boxing Day began in the early Churches, when boxes were used to collect special offerings for the poor. On a day like today, the donations were distributed to the people. Over the years, the wealthy, middle-class families, and commoners prepare boxes filled with food, clothing, and gifts to be given to their workers and the needy in the community. This act of generosity has its roots in the biblical principle of giving and caring for others. For example, today’s Bible text captured the words of Jesus that there are additional bountiful blessings in giving when compared to receiving.
The essence of Boxing Day further features significantly in Christ’s teaching on the importance of attending to other people’s needs. Matthew 25:35-40 says, “For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in… Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” This passage gives a reminder that kindness of any kind is an expression of faith and love for God. In other words, reaching out to the needy counts as serving Christ Himself.
There is nothing that you do for God that goes unrewarded. Proverbs 19:17 emphasises the blessings of giving and showing kindness. “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Beloved, as you bask in the joy of Christmas and celebrate Boxing Day, reflect on the significance of Jesus’ birth and act. Whether through minor acts of kindness or giving, you can make a meaningful impact on those around you. Keep in mind, Boxing Day is a call to express your faith and love for Christ through generosity.
