THE DEBT OF LOVE
Romans 13:8 – Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. (NKJV)
Read: Ephesians 5:22-33
The type of love every Christian must emulate is the love of Christ for the Church. Jesus treasured the Church and gave Himself for her to present her as a radiant body without stain, wrinkle or blemish, but holy and blameless. This affection was so vast that Paul used it to illustrate how a man should love his wife. The woman was formed from the man, making them one body. Therefore, a man must be emotionally connected to his wife because he who loves his wife loves himself.
On the other hand, as the Church submits to Christ, the wife ought to be submissive to her husband in everything. The man must love, while the woman is to submit. Love binds both actions together because there is no way one can genuinely love without giving, caring, and reverencing the other. Amos 3:3 says, “Can two work together unless they agree?” Understanding and agreement foster love in the family.
Love also triggers favour before God and man (Proverbs 3:3-4). This is because people are attracted to a joyous and kind-hearted fellow who seeks peace, salvation, and happiness for everyone. Romans 10:15 says, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” The ‘beautiful feet’ here refer to the divine and human favour that comes from showing compassion for others. In conclusion, as read in the Bible text for today, we are indebted to one another in the same way Jesus loved us. Let’s shun hostility and show love with action. By this, the world will come to the light of Christ.
