FOLLOWING CHRIST
Luke 9:57-62 (58) – Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” (NIV)
Read: Luke 19:11
A certain man told Jesus, “I will follow you everywhere you go.” But Christ’s response, in the Bible reading for today, meant that the gentleman should think very well and count the cost—if he was ready to do the work of a missionary and sacrifice all it takes for God. In those days, many keen followers of Christ expected that He would set up His kingdom on earth so they could partake in it. But Jesus wanted the man to understand that following Him is not mainly about physical gain; instead, it is to do God’s work and fulfil divine purpose.
The fact that Jesus had nowhere to lay His head does not mean He was poor or could not afford accommodation. Christ was rich and had wealthy followers like Joseph of Arimathea. However, the key point here is that every child of God must be willing to forsake their treasures where necessary to please God. No one is called to live a life of poverty or to abandon their families, but we must never allow the blessings we receive from Heaven to hinder the mission we have been commissioned to do by God.
Beloved, being active for Christ and following His steps involve counting the cost. Rid yourself of whatever hinders you from serving God wholeheartedly and fulfilling His purpose for your life! By this, your Father in Heaven will be pleased, and when God is pleased, the rest is history.
