BEYOND THE ORDINARY (Part 2)
Daniel 1:8 – But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. (NIV)
Read: Daniel 1:3-8, 2:48, John 1:5, 3 John 2.
The series “Beyond the Ordinary” is derived from God’s thought that His children should operate above average. Yesterday’s focus was on the spiritual dimension—seeing beyond the physical and staying conscious of the mind of God. The emphasis for today is on standing out from the norms.
Today’s Bible reading chronicles the king’s request for physically fit and intelligent young men to serve in the palace. These men were to be trained and have the honour to eat daily from the king’s table. However, among the men was Daniel, who chose not to eat and defile himself with the king’s meat that might have been offered to idols. Daniel could use the royal platform for personal nourishment and fame but went beyond the ordinary to stand for God in his decision.
In the current generation, the king’s meat can represent moral decadence, while the royal table of nations has the wine of perdition and seductive food of false doctrines served on it. Therefore, it is crucial that you make a conscious effort not to succumb to the allure of enticing but ultimately destructive delicacies. Instead, be known for Christ and the light that shines brighter amidst the darkness.
Beloved, there is nothing you do that goes unrewarded. When you diligently live above the ordinary for God’s sake, He elevates you to a level beyond human comprehension. This was Daniel’s testimony because the Lord gave him wisdom and revelation, including making him the chief of governors in the land. These, and many more, are your portion as you rise above the norms.
