PREVAILING PRAYER
James 5:17
Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. (NIV)

Prevailing prayer moves God and achieves the purpose it seeks. When a prayer resonates with God’s thoughts and agenda, it prevails.
One doesn’t have to be superhuman to prevail in prayer. In the Bible reading for today, Elijah, a human, prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not. This is because King Ahab had gone astray from the divine order, giving credence to the prophets of Baal. Therefore, Elijah’s prayer prevailed on the strength that only God is sovereign and worthy of worship above other gods.
Elijah later prayed for the rain to return. This restoration signifies renewal, hope, and God’s mercy and willingness to forgive those who repent. God demonstrated all these through a prayer that aligned with His mindset and plan.
Prevailing prayer can be on a personal level. Jacob was destined to be greater than his brother, but at a point, he knew things were not all going perfectly. In Genesis 32:22-31, he wrestled with God and prevailed, and his name was changed to Israel. Israel is the apple of God’s eye and is central to the divine agenda (Zechariah 2:8).
Beloved, Elijah and Jacob were normal physical beings who had significant dealings with God. Similarly, seek to understand God’s mind for you and your territory and commit to it in your quest to prevail in prayer. To know God’s mind, one must study the Bible, live a heavenly-cultured life, and be discerning and sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
